Work Statement
I am attracted to small containers. Tiny compartments to carry around with you. Pill boxes, lockets, wallets, cigarette cases, perfume bottles, snuff bottles, poison rings, coin purses, jewelry boxes, treasure chests, etc. Most contain something precious, you can tell by the container. I like the idea of surprises. I like not knowing what I’ll find. Something secret, something illegal, something scandalous. It’s like a taking a peek inside someone’s medicine cabinet, or reading someone’s private diary. It’s taboo, and curiosity is key.
I am naturally a collector. I am always searching for tiny treasures where ever I go. Maybe a piece of glass, or someone’s earring, or a tiny flower, there’s always an object calling for me to pick up. Containers allow me to collect, and carry these precious objects safe on my travels. The container is a vessel for opportunity. By chance in a junk drawer two strange objects meet, fall in love, and a new project is conceived. Almost everything I collect I use in my art pieces, therefore collecting fuels my art and creative process.
Stone setting is a major component to my work as well. I’m a firm believer that anything can be set as a “gemstone”. I also prefer the stones be the main focal point of my designs using simple bezels or prongs when I can to enhance the look and feel of each piece.
My works aesthetic pulls from Cabinets of curiosity, the displays in the Natural History museum, Polly Pocket, miniatures, landscapes, doll houses, antiques, fashion, fantasy, fairy-tales, dreams, nature, wicca, and witchcraft. Wicca is based on the idea that nature is sacred. Magic exists in the form of personal power and our actions, and certain objects and colors have innate power and meaning, to help us achieve our goals.
Because I use lots of colors, stones and natural objects, I find that each ring or pendant I make has its own vibe or feeling it exudes. Some are lucky, some are calming, and some give a sense of strength. All these ideas pull from witchcraft and wicca.
I want the viewer to instantly be attracted to my work. Whether it’s my use of bright colors, or compulsive use of shiny gems, and odd bits. My work is a delicious eye candy. Like a peacock feather, it’s meant to attract and bedazzle! I usually try to create sacred objects, functional containers, and glammed out quirky jewelry. Most of my work is meant to be played with and worn every day.
I also like to push limits in terms of size and wear-ability. Sometimes my jewelry is more meant for show than being worn every day. Cocktail rings, crowns, and theatrical pieces just to name a few fall under this category.
I also dabble in hand making the most fabulous childlike dollhouse/ nightlights one’s ever seen! Being afraid of the Dark just became cool if this was your nightlight. Each one glows a special color and can be plugged into a wall outlet or extension cord. Many taking over 5hrs-10hrs to create they are the most mesmerizing tiny works of art. Miniature sculpture meets a Jeweler’s background in these tiny spaces. Hand forged ladders and masterfully made beds, everything is 100% hand made by me using everyday materials in such a way they become unrecognizable. Your eye sees what I want you to see, and your soul believes it, because its convincing.
Dreams inspire my work as well. The confusing plot lines and rich colors make their way into my miniatures and jewelry. My art has another-worldly feel, and transports the viewer to another more magical realm. There’s a mag-pie in all of us that my work inevitably appeals to. One can’t help but feel under an enchanted spell.
